How
to Help?
Be a Conscientious Consumer
We
have made great strides in conserving and studying Cracids. However,
we have barely skimmed the surface in terms of what is known. The work
of Cracidologists
is severely hampered by funding. In a nutshell, it is difficult to find
the resources to fund Cracid field projects when most government expenditures
are allotted to other activities, especially in developing countries.
If you are interested in funding a Cracid field project or raising funds
to support a Cracid field project, please contact our Chair
Dr.
Dan Brooks (dbrooks@hmns.org)
directly. If you are interested in funding Cracid field projects in
general, your gift will be added to a general account established for
all Cracid field projects. All contributions of funding towards projects
should be tax deductible!

Do
Not Purchase Heart of Palm
Fruits from certain species of palm trees are important in the diets
of some Cracids. Unfortunately, the demand for heart-of-palm by humans
leads to decreased populations of palm trees, resulting in diminished
populations of Cracids. An entire palm tree must be destroyed to harvest
this delicacy.

Holding Grazing Lands in Latin America
If you eat beef, make sure it is from an organization that does not
hold its grazing lands in Latin America. Hectares of rainforest are
clear-cut annually to make grazing pastures.

Do Not Purchase Souvenirs Made From
Animal Parts
If you are traveling abroad in Latin America, do not purchase any "souvenirs"
made from animal parts. Curassow and Guan feathers are often used to
make such trinkets, and the bird's life is often sacrificed for a couple
of dollars from the tourists.
Support Non-Gov. Wildlife Conservation
Organizations
Support your local non-governmental wildlife conservation organizations.
