International
Symposia
1981 - I International Cracid Symposium, D.F., Mexico.
The event was coordinated by Jesus Estudillo-Lopez, and
sponsored by the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico and the World
Pheasant Association. This event pointed out the alarming conservation
status of Cracids as a group. With over 80 participants and 25 presented
papers, the I Symposium established a series of measures that needed
to be undertaken to begin the long road to protecting these economically
important species.
1988 - II International Cracid Symposia, Caracas, Venezuela.
The meeting was coordinated by Stuart Strahl, and sponsored
by the Wildlife Conservation Society (formerly Wildlife Conservation
International - The New York Zoological Society). At the time, this
symposium was the largest avian conservation conference ever held in
Latin America, attracting over 200 participants from the United States,
Europe, and more importantly nearly every Central and South American
country in which Cracids are found. Over 80 papers and posters were
presented, and regional plans for Cracid conservation were explored.
1994 - III International Cracids Symposia, Houston, Texas.
The meeting was coordinated by Chelle Plassé and
other staff at Houston Zoological Gardens. Several dozen scientists
were brought together with the intention of updating the information
base provided by the II Symposium, and to develop key recommendations
for Cracid conservation.
